LAKEWOOD — A man was shot and killed by officers from the Lakewood police department around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday night near West 13th Avenue and Ames Street, according to a news release from the department.
Officers were on a routine patrol near West 13th Avenue and Depew Street when they saw a man shooting off a handgun in Mountair Park Wednesday just west of Sheridan Boulevard, the news release said. The officers were not sure if the man was shooting at someone or into the air.
The officers ordered the man to drop the weapon but the man didn't listen, John Romero, a spokesperson for the police department said Wednesday night. The man then led several officers to an alley near West 13th Avenue and Ames Street where he fired more rounds, including several toward the officers, the news release said
Officers then shot at the man and hit him, Romero said. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A weapon was recovered from the scene. Romero said that it was unclear how many shots were fired and how many officers fired their guns.
Romero originally stated the shooting happened 10th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard. New information has since prompted the Police Department to update the address of the shooting.
