CONIFER, Colo. — The Mountain View town council member accused of shooting a teen who had come to his property to ask about taking homecoming pictures has been formally charged with multiple counts, including second-degree assault and menacing.
The charges filed in Jefferson County District Court stem from a shooting on Sept. 10 in Conifer. Around 4:15 p.m., deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a home on Pleasant Park Road after a woman reported trespassers on the property.
When the deputies arrived they found a 17-year-old bleeding heavily from his face and noticed a bullet hole in the windshield of the teen's vehicle.
That teen and a 15-year-old boy who was with him reported that they went to the property to ask the homeowner if they could take homecoming photos near a lake on the property. When no one answered the door, they returned to their car, which was parked off the property, and began writing a note to ask the homeowner for their permission. A note was later located by investigators.
According to the district attorney's office, as they wrote that note, Brent Metz drove up on the passenger side of the victim’s vehicle, parking it at an angle that blocked the vehicle.
He got out with a gun and a shot went off. It went through the windshield and struck the teen in the face, the sheriff's office said. Both teens reported to police that after the shot, Metz exclaimed, "Oh sh**, my gun went off." They said Metz attempted to render aid.
He's been formally charged with second-degree assault, illegal discharge of a weapon, and two counts of menacing, one for each of the teens.
