A mother faces first-degree murder charges after investigators discovered her 3-month-old baby died last month from injuries consistent with abuse.
In addition to first-degree murder, 21-year-old Bethany Smith was arrested Friday on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death.
Jefferson County deputies received a 911 call saying a 3-month-old baby was not breathing on May 20. When they arrived, they say the baby was not responsive. The performed CPR, and the baby was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Smith is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail.
