MILLIKEN, Colo. — A Milliken Police officer shot and injured a man Monday morning, according to the Weld County Sheriff's Office.
About 1:24 a.m., the Milliken Police Department received a call of a suspicious person near Milliken Elementary School.
Police talked to the person on the phone before officers arrived on scene. The person made multiple threatening statements toward law enforcement, police said in a news release.
An officer got to the scene and contacted the person, whom police later identified as 18-year-old Colin Brixius.
Brixius ran at the officer with a "large knife." The officer commanded Brixius to stop and attempted to use his Taser. Brixius did not stop, and the Taser was not effective, according to the sheriff's office.
The officer then fired his duty weapon and hit Brixus, deputies said.
Brixius was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive, the sheriff's office said. He's still in the hospital under law enforcement supervision. The sheriff's office said once he's released, he'll be arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault and felony menacing charges.
The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team will handle the investigation.
