BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Deputies in Boulder County are searching for a man who is wanted for animal cruelty after deputies found evidence that he killed one of his dogs, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office said George Benyard, 28, is wanted on a warrant for aggravated cruelty to animals and tampering with physical evidence, both felonies. Deputies said the warrant was issued Oct. 5, and "investigators have been actively trying to locate him since."
The sheriff's office said their investigation began Sept. 15. Deputies searched a home in the 10800-block of Empire Road in unincorporated Boulder County on Sept. 18 and brought Benyard and his wife in for questioning, the sheriff's office said.
The investigation came after Benyard allegedly told acquaintances the bathroom of his home was a “murder scene," showed them a photo of a bloody bathroom, and described having killed someone at the home, along with soliciting help in disposing of the body, the sheriff's office said.
While processing the scene, investigators found a dog's body hidden under a bush on the property, the sheriff's office said. Investigators found evidence that the dog had very likely belonged to Benyard, though, they said, he denied having any knowledge of the dog’s existence or how it was killed.
Benyard had three other dogs in the home, deputies said. They were placed into protective custody at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley at the time of the initial search on Sept. 18, the sheriff's office said.
