Darlene Grass, 68, was killed in the shooting at her home on South Elati Street in Englewood on Sept. 28, 2022. An arrest affidavit said Nguyen shot Grass after she and her roommate went to the door because they saw a silhouette outside.
When officers arrived, they found Nguyen running west on West Radcliff Avenue. According to the arrest affidavit, he was carrying a rifle with magazine rounds in it, a pistol, a gunbelt with a pistol holster and extra rifle magazines. He was also wearing a tactical vest, according to police.
Six fired shell casings were found just south of Grass' porch, police said at the time. There were bullet strikes against the house, door and roof gutters. Based on the angles, the affidavit said, the rifle shots came from an angle below the porch going up toward the house.
Grass had lived in the home for more than 30 years, her family said.
In a November 2022 interview, Grass' daughter Lindsie Grass shared memories of her mom's smile, and laughter that she described as contagious.
"Every chance she had the ability to be with friends and family, she was there. Friends and family were her world," she said.
