Man now facing murder charge in I-25 death from September 2017

While originally thought as an accessory to the death of a 24-year-old woman, Mihail Petrov is now charged with first-degree murder in her death.

DOUGLAS COUNTY - More than four months after being taken into custody, a 37-year-old man believed to be involved in some way with the death of a woman whose body was found along Interstate 25 is now facing murder charges.

Mihail Petrox was arrested in Denver on October 13, 2017 and booked on three charges related to the death of Shelby Weatherly. He was originally charged with accessory to a crime/murder in the first-degree, tampering with physical evidence and concealing a death.

Weatherly's body was found on the morning of September 30 off the shoulder of southbound I-25 just south of Castle Rock. She was 24.

In the months since Petrov's arrest, members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office have continued investigating Weatherly's death. As a result, Petrov will now face three new charges: murder in the first-degree, tampering with a deceased human body and aggravated motor vehicle theft in the second degree.

He's being held without bond.

A preliminary and motions hearing on the additional counts is set for March 26.

Weatherly had been arrested multiple times by multiple agencies -- including on a felony drug charge just 21 days before her body was found.

Despite her past, a chief deputy with the sheriff's office said after her body was found that law enforcement was her voice.

"We're doing everything we can to get justice for her," said chief deputy Steve Johnson.

The circumstances of Weatherly's death remain unclear and the arrest affidavit in the case has been sealed.

Weatherly's last known address was in Littleton. She was known to frequent the Denver metro area and used the RTD light rail and other public transportation.

Petrov has a lengthy criminal past that started in 2004 with a weapons charge in Larimer County. Since then, he's been in trouble for theft, robbery and assault. He spent time in the Colorado prison system and was released on June 3, 2017. He served time for theft, forgery and burglary.
