Man shot by Weld County deputy arrested on multiple charges

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — An 18-year-old man who was shot and injured by a Weld County Sheriff's Office deputy early Sunday morning has been arrested and faces multiple charges.

Deputies responded around 12:16 a.m. for a reported disturbance in the 200 block of 2nd Avenue Lane in unincorporated Weld County and encountered an armed man, according to a release from the 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT).

The man, identified by the sheriff's office as Joe Sanchez, fired the gun while deputies were on scene and one deputy fired his weapon, hitting him twice, the release says.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment and was released on Monday and then booked into the Weld County Jail. No other injuries were reported.

Sanchez faces the following charges:

  • Felony menacing
  • Unlawfully aiming a firearm at another
  • Recklessly discharging a firearm
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Violation of a protection order

The 19th Judicial District CIRT is leading the investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 970-350-9676.

The deputy who fired the shots has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing, which is standard operating procedure.
