24-year-old man shot and killed while trying to break up fight

The shooting was reported on East 118th Avenue just before 6 a.m. on Friday, July 14.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A suspect was arrested July 20 in a fatal shooting that happened six days prior in Commerce City.

The Commerce City Police Department (CCPD) said on Thursday Omar Nieves, 28, had been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in the shooting in the 11500 block of East 118th that left a 24-year-old man dead.

Shortly before 6 a.m. July 14, officers with CCPD responded to the area for a report of shots fired.

When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Adams County coroner's office identified the victim as Miguel Antonio Chavez-Eagle.

An arrest affidavit says Chavez-Eagle and Nieves had been out at a nightclub with friends, and we were at an after-party when an altercation broke out.

Two women began fighting after one woman claimed Nieves inappropriately touched her at the club, the affidavit says. The other woman involved in the fight was romantically involved with Nieves, the affidavit says.

Chavez-Eagle stepped in to break up the fight and was then confronted by Nieves, according to the affidavit. Witnesses said Nieves then shot Chavez-Eagle, the affidavit says.
