Man convicted of murdering woman who was found at Boulder County trailhead

Jamie Moore was convicted of multiple charges including first-degree murder in the July 2022 death of Alexis Baca.

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A man charged in the deadly July 2022 shooting of a woman at a Boulder County trailhead was convicted on numerous charges including murder Thursday and will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Jamie Moore was convicted Thursday morning on the following counts in the death of 25-year-old Alexis Baca, the 20th Judicial District Attorney's Office said:

  • First-degree murder
  • Second-degree murder
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Tampering with a deceased body
  • Tampering with physical evidence

Moore was found not guilty of abuse of a corpse. On Thursday afternoon, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to an arrest affidavit, Baca had become stranded in Colorado and offered Moore and three others charged in connection with her death $2,000 to bring her back to New Mexico.

Baca's body was found with a gunshot wound to her head just before 10 a.m. on July 24 by a couple near the Realization Trailhead west of Boulder.

Deputies found an expired New Mexico driver's license with Baca, according to the affidavit. They did a search and found that she was a passenger in a vehicle that had been contacted by a Colorado State Patrol trooper days earlier on July 20.

Moore said that on July 23, he and the other three suspects got into his Ford F250 in order to drive up to meet with Baca. They met her at a Fort Morgan hotel and eventually left, with Baca driving the car from the traffic stop and Cody Hobirk as a passenger. Moore and the others were in his truck.

Moore said it became clear Baca didn't know where she was going so he passed her and pulled over, and Baca followed suit.

He said he got out and approached Baca and noticed she had a gun in her hand, the affidavit says. He reported that Baca fired a shot at him and he fired back, striking her in the head. Moore said that he and Hobirk removed Baca's body from the car and moved it to the area near the trailhead, according to the affidavit.

Moore reported that Hobirk had also mentioned several times that they should rob Baca while there, the affidavit says.

He also reported that Ashley Provine and Elizabeth Griffin assisted with removing items from the car and wiping it down. They left the car in Breckenridge in an area where they believed it would be towed, the affidavit says.

Moore said they also ditched guns at two random locations between Breckenridge and New Mexico.

Three of the suspects were arrested and booked into jail in Las Cruces, New Mexico on July 29, and Griffin was arrested in the same area on Aug. 1.

Hobirk pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 10. He faces 10 to 32 years in state prison, the DA's office said.

Provine pleaded guilty to two counts of accessory to a crime and tampering with physical evidence. She was sentenced to four years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Griffin pleaded guilty to accessory to a crime after the fact and tampering with evidence after the fact. She was sentenced to four years probation with work release.

“This guilty verdict reflects that this defendant carried out a premeditated, cold-blooded murder on Flagstaff," District Attorney Michael Doughtery said. "After shooting the victim in the head, this defendant and his accomplices took significant steps to leave Boulder and cover their tracks in order to get away with murder."
