A 24-year-old man faces charges for vehicular homicide and driving under the influence after he rear-ended a vehicle that had stopped to help another car on US 6 Sunday night, killing the passenger.

Curtis Blodgett admitted to police that he had smoke marijuana the day of the crash, according to the arrest affidavit. Investigators also say they found marijuana and a pipe in his vehicle.

The crash happened just before 9 p.m. on Sunday. It happened shortly after a driver in the right lane lost their bike. Another driver pulled over to help them, and stopped their vehicle in the left lane.

Just as the driver who stopped to help was about to pull away, they were rear-ended by Blodgett’s vehicle.

The passenger in that car died instantly. The driver suffered minor injuries.

Blodgett told investigators he did not see the vehicle stopped on the highway because he was looking down to pick up a water bottle that was between his legs.

Before the crash, he said he was watching the sunset at Lookout Mountain, according to the affidavit.

Police say he cooperated with roadside sobriety tests as well as blood tests.
