SHERIDAN, Colorado — A man wanted in relation to an incident where he is accused of trying to run over a police officer in 2015 has been arrested and faces more than a half dozen charges in the case, the Sheridan Police Department said.
Ismael Rayos, 28, was brought back to the US after he was detained and deported from Mexico by Government of Mexico officials, according to police.
Rayos, an American citizen, had been sought on a warrant from 2015 alleging that he attempted to run over a Sheridan police officer. He was taken into custody with help from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Marshals Service, police said.
On April 26, 2015, Sheridan police officers were called to a store on South Federal Boulevard to investigate a suspicious vehicle. Officers started talking with the driver outside the car, who was later identified as Rayos.
Rayos then jumped in the car and attempted to drive away, police said. According to police, an officer was in the way of Rayos’ escape, and he was thrown to the ground as Rayos fled the scene.
Once Rayos is transported from Arizona to the Arapahoe County Jail, he’ll appear in Arapahoe County Court where he faces the following charges:
- Attempted first-degree assault, extreme indifference
- Second degree assault on a peace officer
- Vehicular eluding
- Criminal impersonation
- Driving with revoked license
- Third-degree assault of a first responder
- Resisting arrest
- Reckless driving
“I am grateful to the law enforcement partners who worked with us to bring in this fugitive,” said Sheridan Police Chief Mark Campbell. “It is good to know that others recognized that an attack on a police officer is a violent offense to be taken seriously. We trust that the criminal justice system will bring about a fair resolution to this case now that it can move forward.”
