LONGMONT, Colo. — The Longmont Police Department (LPD) is investigating the death of a young person who got into a crash after being shot Friday night.
LPD said they received a report of shots fired near Twin Peaks Square Shopping Center at around 9 p.m.
An officer arrived to find a large group of people attending a "car meet up" and identified a suspect vehicle that some juveniles were running to.
Police said when the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, a passenger in the back seat got out and fled the scene. The other passengers were all arrested but have since been released to their parents, according to police.
LPD later received another call of a car accident at the intersection of Nelson Road and Hover Street, where a vehicle had crashed into a pole. When officers arrived, they found the driver, a juvenile male, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. His name and age have not been released.
LPD have identified a "suspect of interest" and are continuing their investigation.
LPD is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the incidents or has video to contact Detective Daniel Kilian at 303-774-3693 or e-mail him at daniel.kilian@longmontcolorado.gov. The police report number is 23-2740.
