WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A Longmont police officer shot an armed robbery suspect late Monday night following a chase into Weld County, the police department said in a news release.
According to Longmont Public Safety, officers responded to a robbery at the Circle K at 605 South Emery St. just before 10 p.m. The officers were provided with a description of the vehicle the suspects left in and were able to locate it on South Martin Street south of Highway 119.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued eastbound on Highway 119, police said. The officers pursued the vehicle and deflated the tires on the suspect's vehicle during the chase.
Despite that, police said the driver continued eastbound on Highway 119 to the area near Weld County Road 7 1/2 where officers used a tactical maneuver to force the suspects off the road.
At that time, police said, a male in the vehicle got out with a firearm. A Longmont officer fired their weapon and struck the man. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to survive, according to police.
Police did not say whether the suspect pointed the gun at officers or if he fired the weapon. No officers were injured.
A female and another male who were also in the vehicle were both taken into custody without incident, according to police.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy. The Weld County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is responding to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
