Lakewood agents shoot, kill man with knife, police say

Police said it happened at a La Quinta Inn on West Hampden Avenue Saturday morning.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Lakewood Police agents shot and killed a man while responding to a shots fired call Saturday morning.

The Lakewood Police Department said at around 7:17 a.m. Saturday, agents were called to the La Quinta Inn at 7190 W. Hampden Ave. for reports of shots being fired on the fifth floor of the hotel.

When agents arrived they found a man armed with a knife in the hallway, according to Lakewood Police. Police said they ordered him to drop the knife, but he refused to drop it and began coming toward agents with it while holding a large dog to his chest. Three agents fired, striking the man. He died at the scene. The dog was also killed, police said.

The man has been identified as 47-year-old Zacariah Devore of Arvada. Police said they recovered a gun at the scene and confirmed the shots were fired inside his room before agents arrived.

No one else was injured.

The shooting is being investigated by the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team. The three agents involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
