Thousands of Colorado State University rams will be packing into the residence halls this week as a new school year begins.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The shelter-in-place was lifted by campus police around 9:20 p.m. for residents in a campus dorm after an aggravated assault with a knife, said the Colorado State University Police Department Wednesday night.

Police said the knife assault happened near Laurel Hall, a student residence hall located on the Oval at CSU. They described the suspect as a "male in his 30s in a black shirt with a black backpack and is on foot and may still be on campus."

CSUPD and Fort Collins Police Department conducted a "thorough search of the area and the suspect is believed to have fled campus."

Campus police asked people to avoid the area and remain inside their residences while they investigated. They said the assault is being investigated separately from a death investigation in Alpine Hall from earlier in the day.

If anyone has information about the assault near Laurel Hall just before 8 p.m. or about the suspect, please call CSUPD's non-emergency number at 970-491-6425.
