LARIMER COUNTY, Colo — A jail inmate is facing additional charges after assaulting a member of the jail's staff, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said.

According to a release, 44-year-old Carmen Scott Musso was arrested Thursday morning and booked into the Larimer County Jail on the following charges:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs - 3+ priors
  • Attempted escape
  • Possession of an illegal weapon
  • Resisting arrest
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Musso, an "uncooperative arrestee," was being monitored in an individual holding cell until the booking process was completed, per the release. That same day, as deputies and medical staff made sure Musso's needs were being met, he "assaulted a staff member," the release said.

The sheriff's office said it filed an additional second-degree assault charge against Musso, who was then issued a $50,000 cash/surety bond in addition to the $10,000 cash/surety bond issued for the charges he was initially arrested for.

On Friday, the release said deputies were walking Musso out of his cell when he attacked and injured one of them. Two other deputies tried to stop the altercation, but Musso attacked them as well, according to the release.

The release said he also tried to take a deputy's Taser before being returned to his holding cell.

One deputy was seriously injured and two others had minor injuries, per the release. All three were taken to a hospital and are expected to recover.

“We expect our staff to treat everyone in our jail with dignity and respect, and that’s exactly how our deputies approached this individual. It’s the right thing to do, and it makes our facility safer. It absolutely sickens me to see this unprovoked and calculated violence against our deputies,” said Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen in a statement. “I often hear people say, ‘you signed up for this.’ While law enforcement does come with inherent risks, nobody deserves to be attacked. We cannot excuse or accept this kind of violence against our public servants.”

Musso now faces the following additional felony charges:

  • Second-degree assault on a peace officer - serious bodily injury
  • Two counts of second-degree assault on a peace officer
  • Attempt to disarm a peace officer

A bond hearing has not taken place for these charges, according to the release.
