WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office will not file charges against a Wheat Ridge homeowner who shot and killed a stranger who entered his home and refused to leave.
The DA's Office determined the incident to be a justifiable homicide under the Make My Day Law.
Wheat Ridge Police Department detectives investigated the home invasion and shooting of an intruder on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019, in the 4600 block of Parfet Street.
During the initial call to dispatch, which came at approximately 10:57 p.m., the caller stated that an unknown man had entered the residence, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department.
The homeowner said that when he confronted the intruder, he was aggressive. The homeowner stated that he, in fear of his life and for the lives of his family, fired one shot at the intruder.
The City of Wheat Ridge identified the intruder as 24-year-old Takwon Wilson.
Wheat Ridge Police officers responded and when they arrived at the scene, they found Wilson unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers began lifesaving measures until Arvada Fire arrived. Efforts to revive Wilson proved unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This was a difficult case for our detectives as well as both families who were devastated by the death of the intruder,” said Wheat Ridge Police Department Chief Chris Murtha. “Regardless of the crime that was committed, one family lost a loved one and another is faced with the long-term impact of taking a life in the course of protecting his family."
The homeowner's family and Wilson's family have requested privacy.
