FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. — A Fremont County man was sentenced to two years' probation after he pleaded guilty to charges related to the killing of three bears last year.
Paul Stromberg pleaded guilty to illegal destruction of big game wildlife, a felony, and failure to dress wildlife, a misdemeanor, in January.
Stromberg killed a sow and her two cubs on his property in Howard, and then dumped the carcasses on state trust land southeast of Salida, Colorado Parks & Wildlife said in October.
CPW said their officers began investigating after anonymous tips came in and social media posts circulated about a possible poaching case.
Investigators found the bears' bodies on Sept. 29. Stromberg was arrested the next day, after wildlife officers determined the bears had been shot and killed on his property.
In addition to sentencing Stromberg to probation, the judge ordered him to serve 150 hours of community service and pay more than $25,000 in fines and court costs.
