Fort Collins Police asking for community help in assault investigation

A man went into the woman's apartment through her second-story balcony and assaulted her on May 4. The man remains unidentified, Fort Collins Police say.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Fort Collins Police Department is seeking the public's help in a home invasion and assault investigation.

On May 4, Fort Collins police officers responded to the Brookview Apartments at 1200 East Stuart Street for a home invasion and assault. The victim, a healthcare worker, was asleep in her second-floor apartment when a masked man entered through her balcony and assaulted her, the media release says.

During the assault, the suspect questioned the woman about how she had sinned and demanded she confess, according to the media release. The man left the apartment after neighbors attempted to intervene.

"We do look at prior cases and we also still search data bases to see if there's cases that have a similar type of markings to it: the same kind of break in, the same kind of words being used, same kind of incident happening," said Kristy Volesky, the assistant chief in Fort Collins Police's criminal investigations division. "We are not able to find any incidents that are similar in nature that we can tie to this to say there’s related crimes out there."

Even with investigative efforts, the masked man hasn't been identified. He's described as a male with a slender build and 6 feet tall, police said.

The police said if you work or are around the area of the Brookview Apartments often, you may have valuable information. Fort Collins Police ask you to contact the department regardless of how insignificant you think the information is or whether they may already know about it.

"We live in this community too, and obviously we want to be safe and we believe that Fort Collins is a safe community so having a suspect out there at large with this level of significance of a crime, the gravity of it is disheartening for us," Volesky said. "It also makes us want to hold him accountable and to bring him into custody."
