FORT COLLINS, Colo — A jury acquitted a man charged with murder and assault following a deadly stabbing at a Fort Collins gas station in July of last year.
Saman Zare was arrested in connection with the July 21, 2023 killing of Duane Brown. According to Fort Collins Police, Zare stabbed him in the chest at a gas station located at 318 North College Avenue.
Investigators said Zare was getting aluminum cans out of the trash at a gas pump when he started arguing with Brown who was standing nearby.
Zare was arrested nearby shortly after the stabbing occurred, according to police.
Family members previously told 9NEWS that Brown was from South Dakota and was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. His sister said Brown was a lifelong Denver Broncos fan who moved to Colorado as part of his travels across the country.
The trial for Zare began on Oct. 28, according to court records. On Nov. 5, the jury returned its verdict and found him not guilty of both second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The case is now closed.
At a prior hearing, Zare's defense team suggested the stabbing was in self-defense.
