FORT COLLINS, Colo. — One person is in custody after police responded to an attempted burglary and a report of gunfire in the 1100 block of Laporte Avenue in Fort Collins Friday morning.
Police responded to the area around 2:15 a.m. for a burglary in progress, according to Fort Collins Police Services. During an attempt to enter the house, the suspect fired one shot from a handgun into the air, police said.
When officers arrived, they were unable to find the suspect but did hear another shot that was fired nearby.
Police issued a NoCo Alert telling residents in the area to "lock doors and remain inside" as police set up a perimeter to find the suspect. Two houses were evacuated during the incident, police said.
The Fort Collins Police Services Drone Unit and K9 Unit were called to the scene and tracked the suspect to a backyard in the 100 block of Pearl Street, according to police. The suspect was uncooperative and after about an hour and a half, officers were able to take them into custody.
The suspect was taken to the Larimer County Jail and booked on charges of trespass, discharging a firearm, prohibited use of a weapon, and resisting arrest, according to police. The identity of the suspect was not immediately released by police.
It is unclear if the suspect attempted to fire at officers when they arrived, according to police.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. A firearm was found at the scene, according to police.
