FOUNTAIN, Colo. — A Ft. Carson soldier suspected in a shooting late Saturday in Fountain has been taken into custody in Texas, according to the Fountain Police Department.
The Fountain Police Department identified the suspect as 21-year-old Stephen Cruz Sandoval, who is an active duty soldier stationed at Ft. Carson, near Colorado Springs.
Sandoval was found Sunday morning in Borger, Texas, along with a missing 17-year-old girl who fled from Fountain with him after the shooting. He is being held in the Hutchinson County jail, awaiting extradition to Colorado, according to police.
The 17-year-old girl with him was found safe and unharmed, police said.
Officers were dispatched about 8:45 p.m. Saturday to 7055 Alegre Circle in Fountain, where they found a man who had been shot multiple times. The man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
During their investigation, officers discovered that Sandoval fled with the girl, according to Fountain Police.
Fountain Police credited several law enforcement agencies in assisting with the arrest: the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Amarillo (Texas) police and Borger (Texas) police. Fountain is in El Paso County to the south of Colorado Springs on the Interstate 25 corridor.
