DENVER — A man has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of his brother Saturday night in the 2100 block of South Xavier Street, according to the Denver Police Department (DPD).
Dominic Valdez, 36, was arrested Sunday morning and was being held in the Denver County jail.
The county coroner identified his brother as 34-year-old Nathan Valdez and his manner of death as "sharp force injuries."
Denver Police officers responded to a call at about 8 p.m. Saturday of a disturbance in the area of South Sheridan Boulevard and West Jewell Avenue, in the Harvey Park neighborhood.
One person at the home called 911 at 8:09 p.m. and said that he was "having a problem" with the victim who was "starting trouble" by "calling everyone names, hitting walls and breaking stuff," a PC statement for Valdez's arrest says.
When asked if anyone was injured, the caller responded "not yet", the PC statement says. As the call ended a disturbance could be heard in the background, the document says.
Three minutes later, at 8:12 p.m., someone else called 911 and reported the victim was "drunk and bleeding really bad", according to the document. The female caller said that the victim was in a room "breaking things" and "may have stabbed himself," the PC statement says.
Police arrived and found the victim bleeding heavily from a stab wound to his chest. He was taken to Denver Health where he was pronounced dead.
Police later interviewed a woman who was at the home. She told investigators she came home at about 6:30 p.m. and said the victim was drinking, the PC statement says. She described him as a "crazy, evil drinker," according to the document.
She said the victim was "going after Dominic verbally" and "throwing things and breaking things in his room," the PC statement says.

She reported that it became physical between the two men and they "both went to the ground" but separated and appeared uninjured, according to the PC statement.
She said at some point the victim fell again and started bleeding, but she was unsure how he became hurt, the document says. She noted that Valdez was in the same room when the victim fell and then got back up and laid on the bed, according to the PC statement. She also said that Valdez attempted to provide CPR to his brother. Valdez gave a statement to the police, but it's redacted in the PC statement, so it's unknown what he told officers.
Officers also found a pocket knife that appeared to have blood on it under a mattress at the home.
