Suspected police impersonator pulls over woman in Erie

The Erie Police Department said there were no traffic stops in the area the woman reported being stopped.

ERIE, Colo. — A woman in Erie was pulled over by a man police said is suspected of impersonating an officer.

The woman was driving on East County Line Road near Moffat Street around 7 a.m. Friday, according to the Erie Police Department (EPD).

She told police a man who was in a black vehicle with flashing lights instructed her to pull over. The man then told her she was being stopped for a headlight violation, EPD said.

EPD said the man didn't ask for her license or vehicle paperwork.

The woman told police he asked where she was going and when she said she was going to work, he told her to return home due to the stay-at-home order.

The man then followed her as she drove home, police said, and then drove off.

EPD said there were no traffic stops by their officers or by Boulder County troopers in that area at that time.

Police said they want to remind people to trust their instincts in situations like this. In the event you find yourself questioning a traffic stop, police ask you to call 911, turn on your hazard lights, continue driving (ideally to the nearest police or fire station) and tell 911 what is happening. Follow the instructions of the dispatcher, who will be able to determine if the stop is legitimate.
