Edgewater Police are trying to find whoever's responsible for the shooting death of a 27-year-old Lakewood man, killed walking up to a restaurant along Sheridan Boulevard on April 5.
Andrew Jenicek, 27, had just gotten out of his car at 2001 Sheridan Boulevard in Edgewater and was about to pick up some dinner around 8:40 p.m. when he was shot and killed in the parking lot, law enforcement said. Police say the shooting looks to be random and that there is no evidence of a robbery.
Jenicek’s aunt, Suzanne Martin, was on the phone with Jenicek’s mother when the police arrived at her house Friday morning.
“I’ll never forget, the officer said 'I’m sorry Ms. Jenicek, there’s no easy way to say it, but Andrew is dead'” said Martin.
Martin is grieving her only nephew, who was a football player at D’Evelyn High School. A former coach, Jeremy Bennet, says Janicek was the kind of person put on this earth to make people happy.
“The world is not as good as it was on [April 4] with him gone,” said Bennet.
After getting a scholarship to play at the University of Sioux Falls, Janicek finished his finance degree at CU Denver and went on to work for the state, according to his family.
“Someone is going to wake me up and tell me this isn’t real - that Andrew is going to walk through that door and be a goof ball and give me a hug and say 'Aunt Suzy, my favorite aunt.' And I’d say you’re my favorite nephew,” said Martin.
Martin is pleading for people to pay attention to the information police have released.
“I know it won’t bring Andrew back but I don’t want him to die in vain,” she said.
Police are looking for the occupants of a silver or white sedan - possibly a Mitsubishi Eclipse. Edgewater PD says the shooter is described as a Hispanic man, 5-foot-6, 150 pounds with black hair in a fade-style haircut.
Jenicek grew up in Littleton, graduated from D'Evelyn Junior/Senior High School and was living in Lakewood before he was killed.
