Durango teen arrested after 12-year-old dies of 'apparent stab wounds'

The victim was the suspect's half-brother, and a woman believed to be the suspect's mother was also injured, a La Plata County spokesperson said.

DURANGO, Colo. — A 16-year-old boy is in custody and a homicide investigation is underway after a 12-year-old boy died of "apparent stab wounds" in Durango, a spokesperson for La Plata County said in a release.

The homicide happened Thursday morning at a residence on Snowy Peaks Way in the Southwest Horizon Ranch subdivision southeast of Durango, the release said. The victim was the suspect's half-brother, according to a county spokesperson. A second victim, a woman believed to be the suspect's mother, is being treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained from "a blunt object attack," the release said.

La Plata County sheriff's deputies were notified of the incident just after 7 a.m. when a driver reported a single-vehicle crash they believe was caused by the suspect when he fled the residence on foot, according to the release. When deputies arrived to investigate the crash, they discovered the scene at the residence, the county spokesperson said.

After the suspect left the residence, a shelter-in-place order was issued for a four-mile radius around the U.S. Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 172 intersection, commonly known as Elmore’s Corner.

The suspect was reportedly found near the Rocket Pointe apartments, six miles from the scene of the homicide, following a 911 call from a resident who identified the suspect. He was taken into custody after deputies deployed a taser unit, the release said.

The names of the victims were not shared due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. The suspect's name was withheld, due to his age.
