DPD pursuit of armed robbery suspect leads to officer-involved shooting in Aurora, police say

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died, according to police.

AURORA, Colo. — A pursuit by Denver police officers led to an officer-involved shooting in Aurora that left a man dead Saturday night, according to police.

According to the Denver Police Department (DPD), officers were conducting surveillance on the suspect, later identified as Dovion Semaj Perkins, who had active warrants for robbery.

Just before 9 p.m., officers pursued Perkins into Aurora on Interstate 225 near East Colfax Avenue, where he crashed into at least two other vehicles, according to the Aurora Police Department (APD).

Perkins then carjacked a silver sedan, and officers pursued him to the 2400 block of Airport Boulevard where they conducted a pursuit intervention technique, or PIT maneuver, and stopped Perkin's vehicle, police said.

Perkins and two other occupants fled on foot. Perkins unsuccessfully attempted to carjack a minivan and then successfully carjacked a maroon SUV. Denver officers stopped and pinned that vehicle.

That was when the shooting occurred, according to police. One DPD officer fired his weapon, and Perkins was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died, police said. No officers were injured.

Afterward, police found a handgun in the maroon SUV, which was collected for evidence, according Aurora police.

The two other occupants, a woman and juvenile male, were located and taken into custody, APD said. The woman has been arrested and charged with at least aggravated robbery, APD said. Her identity has not been released.

The juvenile male was arrested on unrelated active criminal warrants, and charges are pending against in him related to this investigation, APD said. His identity has not been released because of his age.

The 2400 block of Airport Boulevard was closed for several hours for the investigation.

The Adams County Coroner’s Office will handle the autopsy.
