HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — One person is in custody Wednesday after shots were fired at officers who were pursuing a driver wanted in connection with a burglary at a business in Douglas County.
At about 2:38 a.m., Douglas County deputies responded to an alarm at a salvage yard near Highway 85 and Blakeland Drive in Highlands Ranch. Somebody with the management of the salvage yard was watching video from cameras on the property and told deputies that there may be people still on the property.
The sheriff's office set up a perimeter to begin a search of the salvage yard, Douglas County Sheriff Dan Weekly said. While deputies were setting up the perimeter, the driver, later identified as 29-year-old Brenton Zeiler, drove through a fence and rammed a deputy's patrol car with a deputy still inside, the sheriff's office said.
The deputy was taken to a hospital with minor injuries after his patrol vehicle was rammed, the sheriff's office said. The deputy has since been released from the hospital, Weekly said.
Zeiler drove away from the scene, leading deputies on a pursuit, the sheriff's office said. The pursuit went from the salvage yard, northbound on Highway 85, according to Weekly. Zeiler turned eastbound on West Belleview Avenue, losing a trailer that was attached to the vehicle, Weekly said.
During the pursuit, near South Fairfax Street and South Monaco Street, Zeiler fired five to six shots at deputies and officers from the Englewood Police Department, Weekly said. The deputies did not return fire, according to Weekly.
Near South Yosemite Street, Zeiler turned into an area near Cherry Creek High School, according to Weekly. The vehicle hit a tree near Village Greens Park and stopped, Weekly said.
After a short standoff, Zeiler surrendered to deputies, according to Weekly. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to be released and booked into the Douglas County jail, Weekly said.
As of 10 a.m., the sheriff's office was still searching the area near the salvage yard for two more people who were involved in the burglary. By noon, a SWAT team had left the car yard as Weekly said the outstanding suspects may have left the area.
