Man gets nearly 200 years in prison for shooting 2 people in unprovoked attack at Dollar General store

Johnny McCaslin was previously convicted of burglary of a dwelling on six separate occasions and was on parole at the time of the shooting.

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — The man who shot two people inside an Adams County Dollar General store - without any provocation -  was sentenced to nearly 200 years in prison.

Johnny McCaslin, 51, was convicted in March of two counts of attempted murder, first-degree assault (at-risk person), first-degree assault, and several violent crime sentence enhancers related to the shooting on Jan. 26, 2021, at the store near West 52nd Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard.

Last week, an Adams County District Court Judge sentenced McCaslin to 192 years in the Department of Corrections.

On the day of the shooting, McCaslin and his girlfriend made a purchase at the Dollar General store. Immediately after and without any provocation, McCaslin pulled out a handgun and attempted to fire it point-blank at a mentally disabled adult man, prosecutors said.

Initially, the gun did not go off, however, McCaslin fixed the issue and shot at the man several times. McCaslin then turned to the victim's mother, who was in a wheelchair and shot her several times.

He then fired again at the man before leaving the store in his car. The entire shooting was caught on surveillance video, and in a Mirandized interview after the incident, McCaslin admitted to the shooting.

The man was shot in the stomach and his mother was shot in her thigh, leg, and foot.

"These horrific shootings are absolutely unconscionable. This defendant ambushed two at-risk individuals, one of whom was in a wheelchair, in broad daylight, in the middle of a store, for no reason at all – and shot them multiple times, leaving them for dead. It truly shocks the conscience," said District Attorney Brian Mason.

"If not for the amazing medical team at Denver Health, these two victims would not be alive today."

Last week a second jury found McCaslin to be a habitual criminal and found he was previously convicted of burglary of a dwelling on six separate occasions and was on parole at the time of the shooting at Dollar General.

Ultimately, the judge found McCaslin guilty of those additional crimes and sentenced him to 192 years. That is the mandatory minimum sentence for all of the offenses.
