Doberman puppies may be connected to Idaho Springs man's death, say police

The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office is looking for 10 or more Doberman puppies from a man's business after he was found dead on Saturday morning.

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office (CCCSO) announced on Monday that a man's Doberman puppies remain unaccounted for after he was found dead on Saturday morning by a community-organized search party.

Paul Peavey, 57, was reported missing on Wednesday to authorities by Bruce Boynton, one of Peavey’s closest friends and the owner of Pickaxe Pizza in Idaho Springs, and at least four others.

Boynton organized a search party that ultimately discovered Peavey’s body within minutes of beginning their search on Saturday.

Peavey, a breeder of Doberman service dogs, had puppies missing when Boynton supposedly visited the property last week. CCCSO was able to confirm in their statement that as many as 10 puppies are unaccounted for.

The sheriff's office asked for the public's help locating the puppies and said that the puppies may have been sold through social media sites or other ways since Aug. 20.

All of Peavey's puppies are microchipped and if anyone who purchased a Doberman puppy in the central Colorado area within the last week is encouraged to check the puppy for a microchip and contact the sheriff's office at admin@clearcreeksheriff.us or 303-679-2393.

The sheriff's office asked for people who bought a puppy through Peavey's business, Elite European Dobermans, since June 2024 to contact the sheriff's office. CCCSO wants to know if you received the puppy that was purchased or if you did not receive the puppy. This will help determine exactly how many puppies are unaccounted for.

The sheriff's office said that locating Peavey's unaccounted-for puppies may help solve the death investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call 303-679-2393, email crime_tips@clearcreeksheriff.us or submit a tip anonymously through their website.
