DENVER — An owner of a Denver marijuana dispensary said burglars hit his shop not once but twice over the weekend.
The reported break-ins were at The Herbal Cure on Logan Street. The owner, Brandon Burnham, said the incidents caused about $50,000 in damage.
"It definitely just feels unfair. It’s the last thing anyone in this industry would want to deal with," Burnham said. "It's already been a couple of challenging years in our industry, so to have to deal with damage to the property is just no fun."
Burnham said the first break-in was Saturday morning. Surveillance video showed three people inside the business's lobby. They smashed a television and pulled out cash registers, which were empty.
They were able to break into a locked refrigerator and take a few chocolates and pot brownies. Burnham said before one of the people left, they targeted a 200-gallon fish tank. The person smashed the glass with a hammer. Surveillance video showed water pouring out of the tank.
"It was just flooded with chocolate bars and brownies that they got out of the fridge there. Most of the fish were in the tank without water though with a heater running, so dying fish," he said.
Burnham said they had to close the store that day while replacing many of the items that were destroyed.
"Very upsetting and kind of mind-boggling," he said. "I mean, we’ve had customers that actually have, once they hear what happens to the fish, that have broken down and cried in here."
Burnham said they were able to reopen on Sunday, but early Monday morning, they received another alert from their security team. Surveillance video showed a group of people backing into two different bay doors. The people entered the property and looked for things to take.
"They weren’t able to escape with anything valuable. Shouldn’t be able to, because anything valuable is in the safes," Burnham said. "It is just sad that people would destroy things really for no reason because they didn’t wind up getting anything."
Denver Police are investigating both break-ins. They said no arrests have been made. They are developing suspect information to see if the two incidents were related.
Burnham hopes they find the people responsible, as they try to make up for all the money they lost this weekend.
"Hopefully these people can be caught and hopefully the community and customers will support us by coming out and stopping by the shop," he said.
