Deputy fatally shot man armed with metal pipe, CBI says

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the deputy shot the man after he attacked the deputy with the pipe.

CRESTONE, Colo. — A man who the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said attacked a deputy with a metal pipe was shot and killed by that deputy around noon on Thursday in Saguache County.

According to the CBI, a Saguache County deputy was driving near Crestone to serve papers when he noticed a man walking about a mile from the entrance of the Baca Grande Subdivision. The deputy recognized the man and knew he was wanted on a warrant, CBI said.

When the deputy tried to talk with the man, the CBI said the man attacked him with a 4-foot metal pipe. During the attack, the deputy pulled out his service weapon and fired twice hitting the man, according to CBI.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Jonathan Wood, 40.

The deputy was taken to a hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and then released. He has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues, CBI said.

CBI said at the time of the shooting, Wood was wanted on a felony warrant in Saguache County for assault on a peace officer. That warrant was related to an August incident in which Wood allegedly threatened deputies with a wooden stick and punched a deputy in the head, CBI said. Wood then failed to appear in court on that assault charge, which led to the warrant, CBI said.

CBI said Wood also had a misdemeanor warrant in Mineral County for damaged property/criminal mischief.
