DENVER — Denver Police continued their investigation Monday into a dispute four days earlier that ended with someone in a car shooting a bicyclist in the arm.
The shooting happened about 3 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of East First Avenue and Emerson Street – but it wasn't clear what led to it. The bicyclist, who has not been publicly identified, suffered a gunshot wound to the arm.
David Howard said he was walking to his vehicle parked along Emerson Street when he heard yelling but that he didn’t initially think much about it.
“For there to be yelling and screaming in Denver in 2023 is not rare,” Howard told 9Wants to Know. “I didn’t pay much attention to it.”
When he did look, he saw a car – possibly white, possible silver – heading east on First Avenue that was pulled over at the southeast corner of the intersection. Next to it was a bicyclist who was yelling at someone in the vehicle.
“The driver then pulls away, and as he does, I hear a bang,” Howard said. “It was strange. I didn’t even really – I wasn’t sure it was a gunshot. And so I just continued on across the street.”
He saw the cyclist put his bike down and run after the car, then saw him return, pick up his bike and walk it to the edge of Hungarian Freedom Park.
“At that time, I hear him say, 'Oh, I just got shot,' ” Howard said.
Howard grabbed a first-aid kit and helped bandage the man’s upper arm. He said the wound didn't appear to be serious, but he thought it would likely require stitches.
Denver Police responded quickly but didn't locate a suspect in the area. Police have not released a description of either the vehicle or a suspect.
