AURORA, Colo. — A corrections officer has been arrested for second-degree murder following a shooting at an Aurora apartment complex, according to the Aurora Police Department.
Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) Officer Scott Matthews Jr., 26, has been booked into the City of Aurora Detention Center, APD said in a release. Matthews has been a DOC employee since October 2015 and was working as a corrections officer at Denver Women's Correctional Facility.
Aurora police officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound around 10:30 p.m. Thursday at the Greensview Apartment Complex at 16498 E. Alameda Pl., the release says.
The officers who responded to the call tried to save the victim, who was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died, APD said.
APD said Matthews was acting as a private citizen during the incident, and investigators are continuing to interview witnesses.
Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora Police Agent Prince at 303-739-6127 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $2,000 reward.
The Aurora Police Major Crimes/Homicide Unit, the Denver Police Department and the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will worth together on the investigation due to Matthews being a CDOC employee.
Matthews has been suspended without pay while the investigation continued, according to a statement from the DOC.
