Commerce City police search for suspects after 3 shot at house party

Commerce City Police were investigating after a triple shooting at a house party Sunday along East 69th Place that left one man dead and two others injured.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The Commerce City Police Department (CCPD) was investigating a triple shooting at a house party Sunday that left one man dead and two others injured.

Officers were called out just before 2 a.m. Sunday to a home off East 69th Place, near Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.

"It was a little warzone last night," said Louie, a neighbor.

Sunday morning brought little relief from the night for those living along East 69th Place.

"I couldn't get any sleep," Louie said. "You know, it was that dramatic and that intense."

9NEWS isn't sharing Louie's last name, at his request, out of fear for his safety following the shooting.

"From what I heard, I think there was probably close to 30, maybe more shots fired," he said. "Right on the street you can see the shells from the guns, from the bullets."

He said he was jolted awake by a spray of gunfire, steps away from where he and his wife were sleeping.

"I actually heard some of the gunshots hit the house," he said. "It kind of freaked me out, so I just rolled out of bed and dropped to the floor. Woke up the wife and told her to do the same thing.”

CCPD said this started when dozens of young people showed up for a house party.

“At some point, a shooting broke out and multiple people were shot," said Joanna Small, CCPD's public information officer. "When we arrived on the scene, there was one adult male that was deceased. And then there were two other individuals, one was transported to the hospital in unknown condition. And the other self-dispatched or drove herself or someone drove her to the hospital, she has more minor injuries, not-life threatening injuries.”

"We found out that, I guess, one guy got shot and got killed," Louie said. "We did see one of them being taken away on an ambulance."

As the sun climbed higher, detectives spoke with neighbors and witnesses from the party and gathered evidence all down the block.

“It was a really widespread scene with a lot of witnesses to interview," Small said. "Many, many stuck around, which we’re appreciative of."

Bullets lay strewn on the street down the block. Others made their way into Louie's home.

"It was chaotic," Louie said. "That puts the fear of death in you, you know, when you have bullets inside of your house laying on the floor."

One shot was fired through a wall and into an empty gas canister. That, too, was bagged for evidence.

"But we’re good, and thank God we didn’t get hit," Louie said.

He said he and his wife are counting themselves lucky.

"Things can be repaired but lives lost, how do you repair that?" he asked.

Thinking about the families torn apart by this violence, Louie said he's hopeful police can find out what happened, so everyone can start to heal.

CCPD released two images Sunday afternoon of a truck they believe may have been involved. On Monday, police said they had located the truck and its occupants, and they're not considered suspects in this shooting.

Anyone with information about the truck or the shooting is asked to call the CCPD tip line at 303-289-3626.
