ONTARIO, Ore. — A Colorado man charged in what Oregon prosecutor say was a hate crime stabbing has been found unfit for trial and will be sent to the Oregon State Hospital before his case can move forward.
The Argus-Observer in Ontario reports 26-year-old Nolan Strauss was ordered to the hospital for treatment on Wednesday.
The truck driver from Colorado Springs was charged with attempted murder after police said he attacked and stabbed a black man in a truck stop restaurant with no provocation.
The Ontario Police Department said Ronnell Hughes, who is a 48-year-old black man, was at an Arby’s Restaurant on the morning of December 21 when he was stabbed multiple times in the neck by Strauss, a white truck driver.
When officers arrived, Strauss was being restrained by restaurant employees. Hughes had been stabbed multiple times in the neck. Hughes was taken to the hospital.
Strauss has not yet entered a plea, and was unable to be reached for comment.
Mackey's Steakhouse & Pub posted to Facebook and said that Hughes, who had recently moved to the area, had just started working for them. "A man was stabbed for just being himself," the post read.
The restaurant has since raised nearly $4,000 to help the victim.
