LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A man who walked away from a federal prison in Colorado nearly two months ago was captured Wednesday in New Mexico.
Authorities said Edward Verdugo was discovered missing on the morning of Sept. 5 from the minimum security satellite camp adjacent to the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood (FCI Englewood) in Littleton.
Verdugo was serving a 109-month sentence for conspiracy to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute heroin, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and felon in possession of a firearm.
Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Katrina Crouse said investigators knew Verdugo was from Las Cruces, New Mexico and sent someone there to interview people who knew him. They received a tip about a possible location for Verdugo and found him at an ex-wife's house, where he was taken into custody.
Crouse said Verdugo now faces escape charges. It's not clear when he will be returned to Colorado.
