Cherry Creek store manager helps stabbing victim

Will Geraci said he isn't a trained medical professional, but he knew he had to help where he could when a man was stabbed outside his store Wednesday afternoon.

DENVER — Cherry Creek businesses said the Fillmore Plaza is usually a quiet part of the neighborhood.

"Don’t have to worry about a whole lot," assistant manager of New West KnifeWorks Will Geraci said.

Wednesday afternoon, the plaza was filled with the sounds of first responders. Around 3:40 p.m., Denver Police reported officers responded to a stabbing at 2nd Avenue and Fillmore Street.

DPD said two men had engaged in a verbal argument, before one of them stabbed the other. Police said the victim was with a woman at the time and the suspect drove off in his vehicle with another person inside.

The incident happened just steps from Geraci's store.

"We heard some commotion on Fillmore, came out to look as I looked out the door, I saw a car pulling away with two men shouting and another man on the ground," he recalled.

Geraci said the situation didn't appear as serious as it was at first.

"I thought he had just gotten thrown on the ground or something," Geraci explained. "When he moved his hand, and I heard her say 'Oh my God, you just got stabbed,' that’s when I saw the blood and was like, I should probably bring some medical supplies."

Geraci said he ran back into the shop to grab his first aid kit. He said despite a lack of medical training, he knew what to do until professional help arrived.

"I have no formal training, first aid, at all," Geraci said. "It was more like, stab wound, we have a med kit, we have gauze, bleed stop. We’ve all cut ourselves pretty badly here, given it's a knife store. I knew what supplies we did have and knew it would at least help, and to put pressure until someone shows up, if it’s a really deep wound."

Geraci said about 10 to 15 minutes passed before paramedics arrived. He said there were nearly a dozen police cars and several firetrucks on scene.

Denver Police said the victim is recovering from serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

"Yeah, if someone’s bleeding in the street and you have medical supplies, help them. It’s pretty simple," Geraci said.
