CASTLE ROCK –Police are looking for the vandals who broke a dozen bulbs and related wiring on the iconic star on top of Castle Rock – causing an estimated $250 in damage.
The star, which had been glowing blue and orange to celebrate the Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl victory, was vandalized sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
The star was already scheduled to be turned off Sunday – one week after the big win. The broken bulbs won’t be replaced.
Castle Rock Fire Chief Art Morales says firefighters have to rebel from the star to install each of the 80 bulbs on the symbol.
The star has only been lit outside of the holiday season a handful of times. The first was when it was illuminated with a “V” for victory after World War II. It was also lit blue and orange for the 1998 and 2014 Super Bowls.
It is typically lit during the town of Castle Rock’s annual Starlighting celebration the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It stays lit until the last day of the National Western Stock Show in January.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the CRPD tip line at 720-733-3517.
