AURORA, Colo. — A 6-year-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert on Sunday night was found safe and a suspect was in custody, the Aurora Police Department said.
Police said the girl was inside a 2015 Jeep Compass when it was stolen about 9 p.m. Sunday from a gas station in the area of East Iliff Avenue and South Havana Street in Aurora.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert for the girl around 10:25 p.m. Police said around 10:50 p.m. that the girl had been found safe, the suspect was in custody and the Amber Alert was canceled.
On Monday, Aurora Police identified the suspect as Kirk Abercrombie, 35. He was being held on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping and felony motor vehicle theft.
Aurora Police spokesman Matthew Longshore said the vehicle was left unattended and running when it was stolen.
"It's certainly a scary situation for everyone," he said.
Police got a description of the vehicle and the suspect from surveillance footage. The mother's phone was in the vehicle, which helped law enforcement pinpoint that the vehicle was in the northern part of the state, Longshore said.
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office ultimately made the arrest when a deputy spotted the vehicle. Law enforcement followed before making a traffic stop, taking the suspect into custody and finding the girl safe, Longshore said.
"It's a huge relief, not only for law enforcement but the family," he said. "I think the mom probably had the most terrifying hour and 22 minutes of her life, not knowing where her daughter was and whether she was safe."
Longshore said to never leave a vehicle running unattended because it can be stolen in a matter of seconds.
"It may be inconvenient, but it's the safe thing to do," he said.
