BOULDER, Colo. — A firefighter who has worked for at least two departments in Boulder County is facing sex assault charges after several other firefighters came forward with accusations against him, the sheriff's office said.
Kamron Barnaby, 30, was arrested Wednesday. He is facing seven counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual contact - no consent and one count of official misconduct.
The sheriff's office said their investigation began after deputies were made aware of a sexual assault allegation made by a firefighter in her exit interview.
During the investigation, four people came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Barnaby. Two of those people were subordinate employees of Barnaby, who was a captain with the Hygiene Fire Protection District at the time, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies said some of the sexual assaults occurred while Barnaby was on duty as a fire captain.
According to court records, the alleged crimes happened between June 2018 and March 2021.
The Hygiene Fire Protection District did not say when Barnaby left the department, or under what circumstances. According to an arrest affidavit, Barnaby resigned in lieu of termination after an internal investigation in 2020.
Deputies found that internal investigation began after someone learned that Barnaby was romantically involved with a subordinate firefighter, which is against policy.
Deputies reviewed the internal investigation report and found that "several female firefighters were interviewed and spoke about sexual harassment or unwelcomed sexual advances they received from Captain Barnaby," the affidavit says.
"Hygiene Fire Protection District is cooperating with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office for an investigation that involves a former member of the District," the department said in a statement Wednesday. "The District reported the allegations to the sheriff's office as soon as the District became aware of them. We will not release any additional information publicly and ask that all questions involving the investigation be directed to the Sheriff's Department."
Barnaby is currently employed by Mountain View Fire Rescue, where he has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.
"We are deeply concerned about the allegations regarding one of our firefighters," Mountain View Fire Rescue said in a statement. "Mountain View Fire Rescue (MVFR) is committed to being a safe and inclusive workplace for everyone. We're assessing these accusations and currently discussing the situation with our legal counsel. In the meantime, MVFR leadership has placed the firefighter on Unpaid Administrative Leave and will reevaluate that status as more information is available."
