The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner says Katsina Roybal was shot and pronounced dead at the scene at 10:05 p.m. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
Police say a man was also shot in the leg during the incident. He was transported to a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
According to police, the victims were in front of a home when two or more men approached and then opened fire. The man who was shot in the leg managed to run away and call police. He returned to the scene and was taken to the hospital.
Several witnesses at the scene reported hearing several gunshots although police have not confirmed how many shots were fired.
Jeff Crozier tells 9NEWS he was standing on his porch when he heard what sounded like several shots followed by screams. He ran around the corner and found Roybal slumped on some stairs.
"I was just trying to check her pulse and see if she was alive, see where she was shot, but it was kinda difficult to tell," Crozier said. "She's got two kids and she died."
Several other witnesses on scene said Roybal had children, however 9NEWS has not been able to confirm it.
The shooting happened in the Cole neighborhood which is near Five Points, an area that once had a high crime rate.
Decades later, the Five Points neighborhood has been developed into a higher-end residential and urban community.
According to crime statistic data posted on denvergov.org there have been nine murders in Denver since January.In 2009, there were 11 murders for the year.
