Suspect killed by Aurora Police identified

The suspect who was shot and killed has been identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner as 28-year-old Jose Rodriguez-Balderrama.

AURORA, Colo. — The Arapahoe County Coroner Office on Tuesday identified the suspect who was killed after a shooting involving officers with the Aurora Police Department on Saturday night.

The coroner's office identified the suspect as 28-year-old Jose Rodriguez-Balderrama.

The shooting happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Aurora Police Interim Chief Heather Morris. Officers were called to the area of East 14th Avenue and Clinton Street on a report of a shooting and found a man who had been shot in the leg, Morris said.

The shooting suspect, later identified as Rodriguez-Balderrama, drove off in a red Ford Mustang, Morris said. This led to a police pursuit that ended when officers lost track of the car, according to Morris.

Rodriguez-Balderrama then returned to the scene of the shooting less than 10 minutes after the initial call, Morris said.

Two officers saw that Rodriguez-Balderrama had a gun and fired their weapons at him, Morris said. He later died at the hospital.

It was not clear whether Rodriguez-Balderrama fired his weapon at the officers, Morris said.

Neither officer was hurt. They will both be placed on administrative leave.

The person who was shot in the leg is expected to be OK.

The incident will be investigated by the 18th Judicial District's Critical Incident Response Team, as well as internally by Aurora Police.
