The shooting happened in the 11900 block of East 16th Avenue near the intersection with Oswego Street, just west of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Police said officers first responded to a call reporting a fight in a parking lot in the area when the shooting took place. They said they received multiple reports of two men fighting and at least one person with an AR-style rifle.

Once officers arrived on scene, they told the person to drop the weapon several times, police said. Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain said the officers fired shots at the person with the weapon.

Chamberlain said investigators don't believe the man fired his gun at any point, but said there was a sense of urgency because there were children in the area. The man was taken to a hospital where he died. No officers were shot, police said.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.

The man killed in the shooting has yet to be identified.
