Man pleads guilty to bias-motivated charged in gas station attack

After spraying the men with gas, police said the suspect, Riny Kosam, began looking for a lighter but couldn't find one.

AURORA, Colo. — A man who was accused of spraying two people with gasoline as part of a bias-motivated attack in Aurora pleaded guilty on Tuesday.

Riny Kosam pleaded guilty to two bias-motivated crime counts in Arapahoe County District Court and was immediately sentenced to 440 days in jail for each count to be served concurrently. However, he was given credit for 440 days he's already served.

A spokesman for the District Attorney's Office said he'll also be ordered to pay restitution but an exact amount has not been determined.

Kosam confronted the two men who were speaking Spanish at a gas station on South Havana Street near East Mississippi Avenue around 11 p.m. on July 23 of last year, according to Aurora Police.

He told them they "don't belong here" and followed them to their car, then sprayed gas on the victims and looked for a lighter to set them on fire but couldn't find one, police said.

Kosam then threw a rock through the back window of the victims' car and stole their keys, police said.

A person who said they were one of the customers involved in the incident but did not want to be identified, told 9NEWS last year that Kosam also punched the neck of the other victim before throwing the rock.

"I was scared, but I couldn't turn my back on him because he would knock me down," the person said in Spanish. "Now imagine that. He would have finished me. I don't know what was going on with him."

Police said the victims suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Kosam was charged with 12 counts related to the attack but as part of the plea, ten of them were dismissed. An unrelated assault charge against him in Arapahoe County is still pending.
