GOLDEN, Colo. — A 23-year-old man was sentenced to prison on Tuesday for a crash that killed a father and injured two children in February.
Kresten Wolff and his children were proceeding through the intersection at West 64th Avenue and Lamar Place in Arvada on Feb. 5 after the light turned green. Juan Ortega Torres Jr., 23, ran the red light and slammed into Wolff's car. The impact pushed Wolff's car into a resident's yard and home.
Torres' blood alcohol level was 0.174, more than double the legal limit. Marijuana and fentanyl were also present in his system, the 1st Judicial District Attorney's Office said at sentencing Tuesday afternoon.
Wolff's wife, Alisha, spoke at the sentencing.
"His hellos were warm and welcoming," she said about her husband. "His goodbyes were never rushed. He was under a constant mind frame that we must say farewell to our loved ones so they would fully understand how much they are loved by him."
A judge sentenced Torres to a total of 12 years in prison – eight years on a vehicular homicide - DUI charge and two years each on two vehicular assault - DUI charges.
At his sentencing, Torres said he regretted his actions and wished that he could switch places with Wolff.
