Man arrested after 'intentional' hit-and-run in Thornton, police say

A suspect has been arrested after a man was struck and killed early Tuesday morning on the 84th Avenue Bridge over Interstate 25 in Thornton.

THORNTON, Colo. — A man died early Tuesday after a driver intentionally struck him and then drove away, the Thornton Police Department said.

The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on the 84th Avenue Bridge over Interstate 25 and was initially described as an accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, Thornton Police said. Investigators later determined that the crash was intentional and said the victim was struck by a person driving a Ford Expedition, who left the area.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released. 

Police sad around 3 p.m. Tuesday that the Expedition had been found, but they had not yet found the driver.

On Wednesday afternoon, police said the suspect had been taken into custody. He was identified as Mathew Lopez, 34. Police said he is being held on suspicion of homicide in the Adams County jail.
