3rd suspect convicted in death of man who was shot while picking up dinner in Edgewater

Andrew Jenicek, 27, was shot in an Edgewater parking lot after getting out of his car to pick up his dinner.

GOLDEN, Colo. — A third person has been convicted in the murder of a 27-year-old man last year in Edgewater.

A Jefferson County jury deliberated for six days before finding Alicia Valdez, 21, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Andrew Jenicek. She was also found guilty of attempted aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

Jenicek was shot and killed while picking up dinner at an Edgewater restaurant on April 5, 2018. The Colorado native attended D’Evelyn High School. After getting a scholarship to play at the University of Sioux Falls, Janicek finished his finance degree at CU Denver and went on to work for the state, according to his family.

In May, the two other suspects in the case -- Caleb Vigil and Devon Howard -- were sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the crime.

According to prosecutors, Vigil shot Jenicek in the chest during an attempted robbery in a parking lot at West 20th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard.

Vigil was a passenger in a car driven by Howard, and owned by Valdez. After the shooting, prosecutors said Vigil got back in the car and as Howard drove away, he ran over Jenicek, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vigil, 20, was sentenced to life plus 124 years in prison. Six years of that is from a jail assault.

Howard, 21, got two consecutive life sentences plus 171 years in prison. His sentence was enhanced because he’s considered a habitual criminal, according to Pam Russell with Jefferson County District Attorney’s office. He had two prior felony convictions.

Valdez will be sentenced on August 23.
