20-year-old woman killed in Commerce City shooting was 'unintended target'

Police were alerted about the shooting on Oneida Drive around 1 a.m. on Sept. 6.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A 20-year-old woman who was killed in a shooting last week in Commerce City was an unintended target, the police department said Thursday.

The Commerce City Police Department posted on Facebook that they were alerted about shots fired in the 7300 block of Oneida Drive at about 1 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 by their new gunfire detection software.

When officers arrived in the area they found three people with gunshots. The victims included two women and one man. All three were taken to a hospital, where a 20-year-old woman was pronounced dead. The man was critically wounded, but is expected to survive, police said. The other woman had injuries that were believed to be non-life threatening.

On Thursday, police said that they believe the woman killed was an "unintended target" and was not involved in any type of altercation that could have led to the shooting.

Police believe there were people in the area who might have seen something but have not spoken with investigators. Anyone with information is asked to call the Commerce City Police tip line at 303-289-3626. Tippers can remain anonymous.
